The James Gang - Yer Album (1969) by Illegal Cloaking Devices on 02 Aug 2010
Great US hard rock featuring Joe Walsh
Review from AllMusic.com
The James Gang's debut LP, Yer' Album, was very much a first record and very much a record of its time. The heavy rock scene of the period was given to extensive jamming, and four tracks ran more than six minutes each. The group had written some material, but they were still something of a cover band, and the disc included their extended workouts on Buffalo Springfield's "Bluebird" and the Yardbirds' "Lost Woman," the latter a nine-minute version complete with lengthy guitar, bass, and drum solos.
But in addition to the blues rock there were also touches of pop and progressive rock, mostly from Walsh who displayed a nascent sense of melody, not to mention some of the taste for being a cutup that he would display in his solo career. Walsh's "Take a Look Around" must have made an impression on Pete Townshend during the period before the album's release when the James Gang was opening for the Who since Townshend borrowed it for the music he was writing for the abortive Lifehouse follow-up to Tommy.
If "Wrapcity (i.e., Rhapsody) in English," a minute-long piano and strings interlude, seems incongruous in retrospect, recall that this was an eclectic era. But the otherwise promising "Fred," which followed, broke down into a pedestrian jazz routine, suggesting that the band was trying to cram too many influences onto one record and sometimes into one song.
Nevertheless, they were talented improvisers, as the open-ended album closer, Jerry Ragavoy and Mort Shuman's "Stop," made clear. After ten minutes, Szymczyk faded the track out, but Walsh was still going strong. Yer' Album contained much to suggest that the James Gang, in particular its guitarist, had a great future, even if it was more an album of performances than compositions.

Nebula - To The Center (1999) by Illegal Cloaking Devices on 02 Jul 2010
Review from AllMusic.com
Nebula's first non-EP, full-length release, To the Center is another retro-psychedelic heavy rock platter, long on stripped-down riff muscle and surprisingly technically adept guitar jams. The results sometimes meander, which probably isn't of much consequence if this brand of metal is your bag, since this is what you'd expect in this perception-expanding context. What matters more than tightly structured songs are riffs and atmosphere, and both of those are present in abundance.V0 rip

Cain - A Pound Of Flesh (Great Hardrock US 1975) by cgragain yesterday

First-ever reissue of hard rock monster and 1975 debut Lp from Minnesota's CAIN! A hard rock fan's dream with Lloyd Forsberg's "ahead of their time" guitar licks and Jiggs Lee's raucous vocals. Features a full digital re-mastering along with liner notes, lyrics and photos!
"A Pound Of Flesh" was originally recorded and released in 1975. Today, over thirty years later this debut album by Minnesota rock outfit Cain gets another - well deserved - shot.
Right now in 2003 there's obviously a market for re-releases. Even the pop charts are rarely lacking a cover tune from a seventies, eighties or nineties pop or rock tune. Is the well running that dry folks? Hmmmm.
Though some of these Top 40 cover tunes are amusing, most suck BIG time, so I prefer a re-release of a classic rock album anytime. I'm from '72 myself, so obviously I missed the original release of "A Pound Of Flesh", and unfortunately the band was disbanded soon after their second album. A third never saw the light of day.
Today, "A Pound Of Flesh" will depend entirely on an audience that actively looks for re-releases such as this. That and some decent marketing might well be enough to reach the audience there undoubtedly is for classic seventies rock.
There's quite a few 'older' bands I really enjoy listening to. Queen, The Eagles, The Who... a little bit of everything I guess. The music that Cain plays is hardly 'my thing', but I can't deny that there's a couple of very enjoyable tunes here.
"Katy" shows the excellent singer that Jiggs Lee was to his full extent. Soulful at times, and amazingly powerful at other times. I'm sure he's doing a fine job nowadays being a sound system designer. His musical qualities ooze from every pore of this shiny little disk.
The rest of the band; Dave Elmeer (bass, acoustic, keyboards), Lloyd Forsberg (electric guitar) and drummer Kevin DeRemer complement Jiggs and oneanother perfectly. This band sounds like they could've taken on early Led Zeppelin any given time.
But alas, as I told before, their career was short-lived. Thanks to Monster Records however, what little legacy Cain left behind is - at least partly - available to the public once again.

Bulldog Breed - Made In England (Good Hardrock UK 1969) by cgragain yesterday

Ripped By: ChrisGoesRock

Finally here is the official edition of this classic '60's UK psych/prog album from the DECCA master tapes! Originally released in 1969 on Deram this album sounds really ahead of the progressive game on certain tracks like "Broomstick Ride" whilst "Friday Hill" is a beautiful psychedelic number. This really is a late '60's period piece that deserves more attention. The band included future Gun/Please members and finally evolved into T2 very soon after the recording of the album. A Pre T2 / Gun UK psych masterpiece. Features new sleevenotes photos plus bonus tracks (the rare "Halo In My Hair"/ "Portcullis Gate").
There is no way on earth now that some corporate monolith would give a motley bunch of south London teenage longhairs the keys to the studio and a big wodge of cash, saying “go on lads, do what you like.” Yet that's exactly what Decca did in 1969 to these fortunate 16 to 19 year olds, and were rewarded with possibly the most preposterous debut single ever released on a major label: Bulldog Breed’s ‘Halo In My Hair’ (b/w ‘Portcullis Gate’), included here as bonus tracks on the reissue of the band’s only album, Made in England.
‘Halo’ is a fantastic freak-beat rave-up replete with a ton of fuzz and a truly bizarre cyclic percussion/keyboard refrain that hammers itself into your brain until you run round the room screaming “What in the name of fuck is making that noise?” ‘Portcullis Gate, on the other hand, sounds truly like nothing else, Pounding, repetitive drums and filtered guitars lead into an astoundingly foolish lyric concerning madness, ancient battles and the underbelly of the psychedelic dream, bellowed out by a man with so much speed in his bloodstream that he can barely force his teeth apart to sing. Lovely.
The rest of the album is just as schizophrenic, and seems to come from that same place as earlier groups like The Yardbirds (post-Clapton) and The Misunderstood, the tracks still pop song short, but drenched in phasing and filtering, unhinged fuzztone and bizarre instrumentation. There are none of the 20-minute solos you’d expect from London in 1969 (or from the bands that sprung out of Bulldog Breed, Gun and the utterly prog-tastic T2) – just a bunch of Mods who’d discovered acid but couldn't put away the Purple Hearts and wanted to cram every single idea they had into perfectly formed three-minute epics.
They didn’t always succeed; but when they did the results were quite something, from the two-chord Detroit style ramalama of ‘Reborn’ to the flute-spangled psychedelic wonderment of ‘AustinOsmanSpare’, another track with lyrics so shameless that even David Tibet would be embarrassed to sing them.
You want screaming guitar battling against WWII radio traffic? You got it (‘I Flew’). You want to skip through rainbow-hued, diamond-frosted forest glades with saucer-eyed nymphs, while delicate jazz organ and folk harmonies slip between the boughs? You can do that too (‘Dougal’). You want the sleaziest piece of psych ever, with what sounds suspiciously like the singer having a wank over the top of the instrumental section? Well, it's right here (‘When The Sun Stands Still’). You want stomping, drunken, rocking blues, Neanderthal harmonica and titles like ‘Top Of The Pops Cock’?

Not to be missed: Bolder Damn - Mourning (Rare Hardrock US 1971) by cgragain yesterday
Bitrate: 256

This outfit formed in Fort Lauderdale, Florida in the Summer of 1969. They played a sort of heavy rock music in the Black Sabbath/Alice Cooper vein and had a spectacular live show, opening for many 'big name' acts. The above album was recorded in just four hours and pressed in limited quantities for distribution to local fans. Just when major labels were beginning to show an interest John Anderson and Ron Reffett were drafted leading to the band's demise.
Rock On and Breakthrough have a great beat and driving guitar, whilst Dead Meat which takes up most of Side Two shows they were willing to experiment. It's very heavy, quite imaginative and espoused the revolutionary lyrics which were common from bands in this era. The final cut BRTCD featured some fine fuzz guitar work.
In a early stage had Bolder Damn a mad and theatrical liveshow that got a reaction in those days cause neither Alice Cooper or Ozzy Osbourne had turned up, the band reached a good fanbase cause of their liveshow. On the cause the fans wanted an album so the band went into the studio in the summer of 72 recorded Mourning in just 4 hours (!!!) with hardly no overdubs. Now over 30 years after, I am still amazed over the powerhouse soundpicture that this album has. The pre-creation of the cd is different to the repressed vinyl, here Rockadelic were trying to find the analog mastertapes, they were gone completely but guitarist Glen Eaton saved the situation by his personal tapecollection along with the support from the rest of the lineup.
The sound have been mentioned, the album is also very dynamic and have a groove that still beats the shit of a lot of releases that is coming out today, Mourning is a combination of Blue Cheer,The Stooges, MC5 and the early Sabs ,a mighty asskicking tripping release. The haunting doompower of Dead Meat, a mindblowing killer track, the moving boogie feel of Got That Feeling and the larming Monday Mourning is just some of the excitement here on this very special disc. Bolder Damn could have been huge, negotiations with a couple of labels had just started but frontman John Anderson and bassist Ron Reflett got drafted into the US Army at the time and that brutally interrupted the bands following plans to make a proper release and spreading the name outside the state.
Bolder Damn have reached fame in recent years cause of the newpresses by Rockadelic and Void and the bandmembers are still alive so they should get together and do what Josefus and Bang are doing now. Mourning is a mighty testament over one of the most essential powerhouse albums from the early 1970s. A sure investment for your collection.

T2 - It'll All Work Out in Boomland (1970) by Illegal Cloaking Devices on 30 Mar 2010
Review by Area70 @ ProgArchives.com
T2 were one of the great mysteries of the late 60s early 70s. Should have been HUGE but somehow lost out to lesser heavy prog bands. All three members of this trio were exceptional musicians and the songwriting is top-notch. The interplay between the trio is well balanced between individual virtuosity and group dynamics. Although the recording itself isn't the highest quality, the music production is solid, especially the orchestral sections of "No More White Horses."
If you like the idea of the darker sides of the Hendrix Exprerience and Cream, paired with the scope and expanse of the early days of prog rock, then this release is well worth checking out. Also, If you're famliliar with the fuzzed out, underground-feel of early Vertigo label releases and that appeals, then this release should be a priority.
V0 Rip with logs.

Between 1966-1968 the Lemon Drops were a typical three-chord garage band from Chicago. When the Lemon Drops broke up in 1969, three former members became Buzzsaw and began dipping into the heavy rock of power trios like the Jimi Hendrix Experience, Cream, and especially Blue Cheer. Buzzsaw's sound caught between their garage band roots and their burgeoning acid rock influence, not doing either form justice. Cuts emphasizing cosmic enlightenment like "Saturn Jam" and "Saturn Is Just a Few Days Away" have nothing in common with the truly cosmic themes composed by Sun Ra. This is mainly for acid rock collectors and archivists. ~ Al Campbell.
From Chicago, Buzzsaw were a short-lived acid rock trio who were formed in 1970. Eddie and Gary Weiss had earlier been in the reknowned The Lemon Drops, and Watermelon, and in fact Buzzsaw are best known for a version of The Lemon Drops' classic I Live In The Springtime. The liner notes to Collectables Chicago Garage Band Greats - The Best Of Rembrandt Records 1966-1968 reveal that this was in fact the same recording as the earlier The Lemon Drops, but in a previously unreleased stereo mix.
Collectables CD anthology From Lemon Drops To Acid Rock! also compiles recordings from 1969 which fans of The Lemon Drops will enjoy.(All Music Guide)

Bubble Puppy - A Gathering of Promises (Psychedelic Rock US 1969) by cgragain yesterday

Bubble Puppy was a Texan psychedelic rock band formed in 1964 in Austin, Texas by Rod Prince and Roy Cox. Looking to form a "top gun rock band" based on the concept of dual lead guitars, Prince and Cox recruited Todd Potter; a gymnast, sax player and guitarist. With the addition of Danny Segovia, the original line up of Bubble Puppy was complete. Bubble Puppy's live debut was opening for The Who in Austin.
After several lineup changes, the final roster for Bubble Puppy settled at Rod Prince and Todd Potter on lead guitars, Roy Cox on Bass and David "Fuzzy" Fore on drums. In 1967, Bubble Puppy signed a recording contract with Houston-based International Artists, home to the 13th Floor Elevators and the Red Krayola.
Bubble Puppy had a minor hit for International Artists in 1968 with "Hot Smoke & Sasafrass". Although the single was popular in Europe it languished in the United States, never climbing above 14 on the Billboard 100. Its lack of performance at home was the source of considerable friction between the band and International Artists, as was the label's refusal to sign a licensing deal for the single with the Beatles' Apple Records.
In 1969, Bubble Puppy released their only full-length LP A Gathering of Promises. After continuous conflict with International Artists over financial issues, the band eventually left the label. Signing up with Nick St. Nicholas of Steppenwolf as a manager, Bubble Puppy moved to Los Angeles, changed their name to Demian and signed to ABC-Dunhill. Demian released one self-titled album in 1971, but its failure to perform on the charts led to financial difficulties with the label and, in 1972, Bubble Puppy split up.
The members of Bubble Puppy continued to be active in the music industry after the band's demise. Potter and Prince played with Sirius through the late 1970's, and Fore drummed with the Texas punk rock band D-Day, co-writing their cult hit "Too Young to Date".
The name "Bubble Puppy" was taken from "Centrifugal Bumble-Puppy", a fictitious children's game in Aldous Huxley's Brave New World. Demian was named after Herman Hesse's 1919 novel, and "Hot Smoke & Sasafrass" was a line lifted from an episode of The Beverly Hillbillies.

Brigade - Last Laugh (Superb Psychedelic Rock US 1970) by cgragain yesterday

The story of the Brigade will ring bells of recognition from just about anyone who grew up in the ‘60s. Here’s how the story goes: teenagers form garage band, start playing teen dances, eventually cut a record and release it locally to a bit of acclaim but no real fame. Then they move on with life, get married, establish careers, forget about rock and roll - and 30 years later are amazed when someone “discovers” them all over again, starts writing and calling and asking for specific memories long ago cast into the bins of history. The next thing they know, their music is reissued and they reach more people on vinyl or CD than ever heard them the first time around…and we all get a “Last Laugh”.
That about sums up our story of The Brigade. Now for the juicey details.
THE PORTLAND SCENE
Of course, The Brigade emerged from a context - in this case a very vibrant ‘60s music scene in the Pacific Northwest. The “Northwest Sound” in fact had two rival epicenters: the Tacoma/Seattle area and, 3 hours drive to the south, Portland, Oregon. From the late ‘50s and on into the ‘60s, the region produced its share of wellknown acts: The Kingsmen, Paul Revere & The Raiders, Don & The Goodtimes, The Ventures, The Fleetwoods, The Wailers, and The Sonics. Most of these bands initially focused on a white version of R&B, gradually moving into original songs that got regional radio play and occasionally broke out into the national “hitmakers” scene. Other wellknown Northwest artists of the era included The Viceroys, The Dynamics, The Frantics (two of whom later re-emerged to form Moby Grape), Little Bill & The Bluenotes, Ron Holden, Merilee Rush & The Turnabouts and a handful more. But of course for every one band that made it into the studio, much less got airplay, there were another 50 bands caught up in the dream.
Portland, with its near neighbors Salem and Eugene to the south, had the usual share of teenagers doing their musical thing. Once they were ready to move out of the bedroom and garage, bands had numerous venues to show off their stuff: school dances, store openings, church events, private parties, plus a whole circuit of teen dance halls and armories. The idea was to have fun, meet girls and make a little money. Portland also offered an annual teenfair Battle of the Bands, affording the lucky winners some local press coverage, maybe some cash, musical instruments or amplifiers, and often the greatest prize of all, “a recording contract”.
THE BETTER SET BEGETS THE BLUE BRIGADE…
Growing up in the north suburbs of Portland during this era, Bob Anderson was an 8th grader when he formed “The Better Set” with bass player Timmy Vetter and singer Peter Belknap. By the time the boys had started high school (Bob and Tim at North Catholic, Peter at Central Catholic), they had picked up guitarist Ed Wallo (also from Central Catholic) who in turn brought in keyboard player Eric Anderson (of Grant high school). They found a rehearsal place in Eric’s basement, and Eric’s dad proposed a new band name: “The Blue Brigade”. Working under that name, the band gigged all over the area through mid-’67, when Timmy left (to form “The Melody Boys”, later “Terry & The Pirates” and “Sound Junction”.)
Reissue of this obscure LP release from 1970, originally from the Pacific Northwest. "This is one of our alltime favorite album when it comes to Underground & Psychedelic music. One of ten we would take on an island. Full of dynamic and strong fuzz guitar solos, driving drums and amazing vocals, which deserves this offical reissue.
We located tons of unknown photomaterials which will be included in the booklet and some linernotes will give you the full background of the band. We can even include all tour dates the band made between 1967 and 1970. (Originals are impossible to find because only 100 copies were made at the time and some even had the wrong record in)."

Bodkin - Bodkin (Good Scottish Hardrock 1972) by cgragain yesterday
Size: 73.8 MB

mp3
Ripped By: ChrisGoesRock

This 1972 album was previously only available as a hideously rare private pressing. Five tracks of hard and heavy rock, with some outstanding guitar and keyboard work make up the only album from this Scottish band. Akarma CD comes in elaborate fold out "crucifix" hard card sleeve.
On the Comet Records website, were you can purchase this self-titled Bodkin LP, it says "File close to Black Sabbath." This music had no similarities to the heavy metal godfathers' recordings. The only thing that was comparable was the inference to Satanism with the burning cross and the offertory head of a ram.
What you will find most intriguing besides the music however is how the LP was packaged. The sleeve the album comes housed in has so many folds you will think that you are doing origami. The album cover actually folds out into what you see pictured here, and it is quite large. You can use it as a poster if you wish because the actual LP has its own self-contained sleeve built around the poster. There is no doubt that this is one of the more unusual LP's I have had the pleasure to listen to and enjoy from the label since I started covering their product in 2000.
The Hammond Organ is the primary instrument on this LP. The influence of its sound fits principally well within each song. "Aunty Mary's Trashcan," easily the best track on the LP, is nearly 11 minutes long and it illustrates my point perfectly. "Plastic Man" was the only cut where the guitar cuts loose as a featured instrument. All of you six-string aficionados need not being distraught over this as the electric guitar is an essential part of the mix with this music, it just is not as out front as you may be accustomed to.
If you look at the year this was recorded (1972) and where (U.K.) it is obvious what the group was trying to accomplish. They, like many others, were attempting to break new ground and become more progressive utilizing the keyboards as center from where their sound emanated from, while building the rest of the instruments around it. As successful as they were in accomplishing this they never made it as others did from the country. I a most thankful that bands that created such wonderful rock music can be given their just due and remembered with excellent reissues like this one

Bintangs - I'm On My Own Again (Good Blues'n Rock Album From Holland 1969-72) by cgragain yesterday

The Bintangs from Beverwijk were originally named Rocket Dynes and Black Phantoms. They didn't only become known for their rough, smoky Hoogoven-born sound, but also for their great number of line-up changes. In the 60's, especially in the province of Noord-Holland, they had a firm following, which, in the cities of Beverwijk and Haarlem, manifested itself in posters plastered on many walls and even a gigantic gas tank with their name painted on it. Once at the Kennemer Theater, which was the place for open-air appearances at the time, the whole floor was crushed and demolished into pieces by the over-enthusiastic fans. Despite this, the Bintangs (Malay for "stars") remained one of the most underrated groups in the Netherlands.
This is the most complete summary of the group's members: Drums: Nono Piepelenbos (59) Rob Wijsters (59-60) Fred Maas (60) Gerry Ottenvanger (60) Leo van Olfen (60) Jimmy Jansen (60-63) Henk van Besu (63-66) Peter de Leeuwe (66-67, ex-Hottlets & Moans, to Los Zomos & Ekseption) Frans Kroon (67, ex-Hamlets) Henk van Norden (67-68) Hermke Klaasen (68, ex-Blues Vocation) Harry Schierbeek (68, to Kraayeveld) Aad Hooft (68-74, to Oscar Benton) Harry Schierbeek (74).
