This rockin', Sydey based two piece is called The Mess Hall. Their debut (EP) "Feeling Sideways" oozes simple raw guitar and thumping drums, hard enough to break bones. They make a hell of a noise for a duo, but damn it's a good noise!!

Sarah Jaffe is thrilled to announce the upcoming release of her debut full-length album - Suburban Nature. Due out May 2010 on Kirkland Records, the album was produced by John Congleton (Polyphonic Spree, Explosions in the Sky) who also produced Sarah’s debut EP - Even Born Again. The intensely intimate EP was released in August 2008 with limited distribution and earned Sarah a number of accolades including a feature on NPR’s “Song of the Day” for the title track and saw her winning several awards at the 2008 Dallas Observer Music Awards: “Best Folk/Acoustic Act”, “Best Female Vocalist”, and “Best Solo Act”.
“The EP has a very stripped-down minimal vibe, it’s an honest introduction. With Suburban Nature I wanted to stay true to what each song sounds like live, but add some layers.” - Sarah Jaffe
Suburban Nature will be most people’s introduction to this incredibly talented 23 year-old singer/songwriter from Denton, TX. However, Sarah has been turning heads with her memorable live performances over the past couple of years. Currently on a sold out tour of the UK and Europe with fellow Dentonites Midlake, her performance at 2009’s Austin City Limits Festival earned her a nod from Rolling Stone and a live show at Stubb’s had the Austin Chronicle calling her “…a major new talent”.

Although they were together off and on in different stints since they formed as the Nighthawks in 1962, blues trio Frank Frost (harmonica, piano, organ), Big Jack Johnson (guitar) & Sam Carr (drums) has had a relatively sparse recording history. They began calling themselves the Jelly Roll Kings in 1979, but the music remained the same stripped-down, no-frills version of juke joint blues that reimported the Chicago blues format back to the Delta and gave it a swampy spin. Off Yonder Wall was another reunion of sorts for the trio. The album was recorded in 1996 by blues enthusiast Robert Palmer (author of a popular blues history called Deep Blues) and was released on Mississippi's Fat Possum Records a year later, chock-full of spunky blues, most of it done at a quick tempo and anchored by Johnson's aggressive guitar playing and ragged vocals. Frost, who is probably best known for his incendiary harmonica playing, only features the instrument on one track here, and likewise only takes one lead vocal. His swirling, subtle organ work, though, gives the trio a surprisingly thick, punchy sound, and of course, Carr drives it all home. Among the highlights here are "Frank Frost Blues," "So Lonesome," the funky "Fat Back," and the driving, live-sounding closer, "I'm a Big Boy Now," but the whole album is one big swampy blues romp that is of a piece with the rest of their recorded output, whether you call them the Nighthawks or the Jelly Roll Kings. (Indie,Rock,Garage,Lo-Fi,Psychedelic)

Austin, TX’s The Strange Boys evoke a wild-eyed, porcelain-skinned innocence that is capable of summoning the wayward spirit of Brian Jones. The mystery of the South couples with the mastery of rhythm to create a sound completely timeless and familiar, yet absolutely raw and avant-garde. Greg Enlow’s syncopated, organ-driven grooves hark back to The Seeds’ “Pushing Too Hard” while guitarist Ryan Sambol’s voice wavers beyond comparison. Older brother Philip Sambol keeps the pulse with the aptly named Matt Hammer, who unmercifully pounds an old Ludwig set.

The Strange Boys began as a duo (Hammer and the younger Sambol) in 2003. The other two joined in 2005 and the band has been on tour non-stop ever since. Since 2003 the Boys have recorded a wealth of material which was passed around at shows and to friends, but never officially released. In 2007, Dusty Medical Records put out the Nothing EP, and in 2008, In The Red released the ìWoe Is You and Meî single. Now, finally, the band’s proper debut album is seeing the light of day. It’s easy to imagine The Strange Boys’ And Girls Club, a sixteen-track beast, blasting out of any stereo system between The Psychedelic Sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators and Wire’s Pink Flag.

The Strange Boys were the backing band for Mighty Hannibal (the ’50s R&B recording artist); were main support for Roky Erickson and the Explosives at the Chaos in Tejas festival; have played South by Southwest the last four years, the Fuck Yeah Fest the last three years, Austin City Limits, Festival in Music Fest Northwest, and Bamalama (all in 2008); shared bills with Daniel Johnston, Black Lips, Reigning Sound, King Khan and BBQ, Jay Reatard, Mika Miko, No Age, and BRMC; have toured with The Black Angels, Fucked Up, The Carrots, and Crystal Antlers; and will tour with Darker My Love and Mika Miko in ‘09.î

Lightspeed Champion is the alter ego of one Dev Hynes - ex-Test Icicles. Currently signed to illustrious independent, Domino Records, it contains musical elements from a variety of genres. It’s a veritable soundscape of forward thinking songwriting with solid pop hooks and ambitious instrumentation (strings! flutes! guitars! pianos!)
Comparisons can’t be drawn to one artist, but there’s certatinly elements of Fleetwood Mac, Smashing Pumpkins, through to Hall and Oates, Nirvana, Patrick Wolf, Neil Young and even Bright Eyes - whose collaborator, Mike Mogis, also produced Lightspeed’s debut album ‘Falling off the Lavender Bridge’.

The follow-up to Falling off the Lavender Bridge was recently completed, with a release in February 2010. It is produced by Ben Allen (Gnarls Barkley, Animal Collective), and features the song “Madame Van Damme”(formerly known as “The Prostitue/Escort Song”), which has been played live regularly. The first Single to be released off of this album, is Marlene. It will be released Digitally and on 10” Vinyl.
In the downtime between the release of the new Lightspeed Champion album Hynes announced a side-project called Blood Orange, with whom he is planning to record an album soon. He released a demo of a song called “Said No” from the project on his blog.

Combining international psychedelia and the new-school beat diaspora, Gonjasufi’s dark songwriting, affecting vocals and street-mystic vibe will leave an indelible mark, as witnessed so far on collaborations with Flying Lotus and Gaslamp Killer .

Crocodiles - Summer of Hate Crocodiles - Summer of Hate

Crocodiles are a two-piece from San Diego, USA formed in 2008 playing lo-fi new wave, featuring former members of The Plot to Blow Up the Eiffel Tower. So far they have released a 7” on Zoo Music, and have two forthcoming split 7”s with a number of artists plus an LP entitled ‘Summer of Hate’.
(Taken from Last.fm)
I picked that one from a blog on a hot summer night. I just got it because I was amazed by the title "Summer of Hate" and the description that was given on the blog that Crocodiles combine lo-fi new wave with indie elements. And hey, Summer of Hate is a damn sexy name for a indie record. The music is awesome, so enjoy it.

Music of dreDDup is a mixture of dark noisy sounds with rough industrial rhythm followed by metallic vocals. They are mostly influenced by post industrial music scene of the late 80's and the mid 90's. After experimenting with weird noises and rough drum beats they embraced commercial segments in their sound, making it more popular for some wider range of listeners. Today, they sound like a crossover of every genre they get in touch with.
dreDDup was formed 4th of June 1997 in the small city of Novi Sad Located in Serbia (Europe). In the beginning the whole band were two punk guys who began to experiment with electronic music. They DIY produced their first demo 'BDTP' in late 1997. and their first demo album 'Abnormal Waltz' in late 1998. During the late 1990s dreDDup were part of what was known as the post- industrial / noise influenced band but their sound changed rapidly - finally gathering it all under the label of industrial / crossover. Many DIY cassette EP's and demo soundscapes were recorded in that period but were never officially released. Live performances took place and members changed.
Exploring the dark sides of the human mind and the distorted production of truthful industrial crossover music, they've released their first official album 6 years later. 'Mr Bordnead's Feast' (2004) saw the addition of violins, keyboards, female back vocals and live instruments. It sounded more mainstream and commercial but band did it with a purpose to get the attention from the Serbian media. More innovative than old demos , yet retaining all the key elements of the early era, 'Mr Borndead's Feast' was slightly darker, although a long way off the intense darkness of the first two demos. This album talked about the past and the bloody feast of the close minded. 2004's showed a band continuing to expand and redefine their sound and purpose. A substantial increase in live performances - once an unheard of rarity - has lead to much greater recognition by a new generation of fans.
In 2005, Holland music label MoocSound Records , released their 'Mr Borndead's Feast' album in digipack format. Band than produced several videoclips and entirely dislocated their sound from the other surrounding bands. dreDDup's next release came in august 16th. 2007, when they released their second album - 'Future Porn Machine'. Following the footsteps of 'Mr.Borndeads Feast' this new album sounded more darker and more industrial rock than the previous one leaving the production rough. The main concept of this album was the pornographic future, where art = pornography = art where machines are replaced by humans. "Insurrection Records" from Belgrade recognized this band's music and agreed to release this album. dreDDup than finally abandoned that mainstream sound and went back to the basics of their music leaving the old work behind. After this move, they finally got the recognition by the wider audience. It continued by making the official remixes for Nine Inch Nails and re-relase of their old demo album 'Abnormal Waltz' on CD for 9 foreign labels.
In 2008, the band was included in much of the foreign music compilations. Third album 'El Conquistadors' was than finished in late 2008. This album was meant to be totally different from their previous ones. The new dreDDup sound followed more post- industrial sound and less melodies, including some very dark vocals and music that brought new dark energy in their live performances. It's concept was to bring the old sound from the 80's back to life. All 15 tracks are for the "chosen ones" only and band decided to release a bonus DVD with it. DVD contains "Industrial Renaissance" 40 min documentary about the band and 50 min live video of the dreDDup show "Live in 219". This album was the last one in time trilogy and is talking about the present tense and human inner boundaries. Album was officially released for Insurrection Records on March the 6th 2009.
Although primarily a musical group, dreDDup has sometimes worked in other media. In their early years, they've produced several works of video art., film soundtracks and theatre music. Collaboration with many underground acts and artists also took place in their career.
They are currently on tour and working on their new fourth coming album which is about to be released in the beginning of 2011. This will also be the last dreDDup album.

The Flaming Lips - The Soft Bulletin (1999) [FLAC] The Flaming Lips - The Soft Bulletin (1999) [FLAC]
by holyfuckingshit40000 today

"It seems to me that depression sells. There's a strange comfort in sadness. It's like, there's no point to life, so why should I have to do anything? Why live my life? It would follow that the music industry would latch onto this. Bands and artists such as Linkin Park, Evanescence, Elliott Smith, etc. make music designed for the depressed. It's become pervasive. If you listen to the radio for five minutes, you'll be struck by the amount of negative energy that comes from it.
As a result of the success of hopelessness, it's a rare thing that you find a truly happy record. As rare as they are, they're certainly a breath of fresh air when you come across them. The Soft Bulletin is one of these records. It's a celebration of love, hope, and innocence, in an increasingly cynical world. And while it doesn't deny that the world is a dark place, it tries desperately to keeps hope alive.
It starts off strong, and keeps the pace throughout. The first two tracks, Race for the Prize and A Spoonful Weighs a Ton, are a story about, as far as I can tell, two scientists trying to find a cure for a pandemic. The pressure is unbelievable, and there is a chance that they could die from this pandemic, they struggle onward, finally discovering the cure that will save mankind. While they are ecstatic, they never forget the cost of the discovery.
After that, while it's a concept album, it doesn't really tell a story. It becomes an angel sitting on your shoulder, reassuring you that every time things start to get heavy, it's not the end. For example, The Gash is about getting up and carrying on after a bad event. Waitin' for a Superman tells us that though the world is dark and bleak, God or Superman hasn't forgotten. He's just gathering enough strength to save us. Every other track is just as hopeful.
Every track on here is a great song, though two tracks, The Observer and Sleeping on the Roof, are instrumental, and may not stand as well on their own. This is just an all around fantastic album. It's like a box of kittens, or a big, fluffy blanket, in that when you are listening, it's practically impossible to feel down. I'm a negative, cynical, depressed shell of a man, who spends his waking hours wallowing in hate and self-pity, and I can't feel bad when listening to this album. It's like a cheap alternative to therapy. It's like a fix when your on happiness withdrawal. It's like someone captured good feelings, hope, love, and kindness, and managed to record them on a CD. Utterly brilliant."
tl;dr - Cool psych pop. Pitchfork eat dicks.
