A trio led by the highly technical extreme metal guitarist Ron Jarzombek, Blotted Science are an instrumental group that formed in 2004 in San Antonio, Texas. The other members were Alex Webster on bass and Charlie Zeleny on drums. Jarzombek, who built his reputation on his skilled guitar playing in groups like Spastic Ink and Watchtower, released a number of works over the years before forming Blotted Science. Things got out of hand and Iggy took control, told us to turn the music down, put the booze away and went out to talk to the cops. It was awesome. He was a real nice guy.

This cd has been assaulting my earholes on a regular basis for about three days now and I couldn't be more surprised. While I LOVE Drawing Down The Moon and Oath Of Black Blood their other releases just didn't do anything for me, especially their newer stuff, so I wasn't expecting anything spectacular. But that's what I got. Spectacularness (that a word?). I was completely blown away after listening and still am. I love being surprised like this by a band. The last paragraph of the review below pretty much sums it up...
"In 1993 a black metal band from Helsinki, Finland released a then unappreciated but now cult classic album called Drawing Down The Moon. This bizarre album twisted the dark and brutal techniques of first-generation black metal bands like Blasphemy with hypnotically repetitive electronic soundscapes into what I can only describe as a fourty minute journey into the most primal elements of the unconscious mind. After this release the members of Beherit went on to explore electronic music, mostly abandoning black metal.

15 years later Beherit have returned to the dying art of black metal with the release of Engram. While it is reminiscent of Drawing Down The Moon in some ways, it is a very different release overall. The electronic influences come more in structure than instrumentation and aesthetic, although they certainly do make use of electronic sounds on most of the songs (usually in the form of keyboards but there is some other stuff in there too). At the heart of it this is easily one of the most straight-forward and well written black metal albums to come out in a long time.

Unlike their earlier works, which were composed in a mostly primitive style of crushing black metal, this album is filled with riffs that wouldn’t sound out of place on an early Bathory album, albeit with more of a modern feel. This certainly has an authenticity to it that “retro” bands lack; this is classic black metal made by guys that grew up listening to and playing this stuff. It’s this awareness of technique and feeling of passion and authenticity that make this album so good. The riffs are fairly simple, but unlike your neighbor’s myspace depressive black metal band they are extremely memorable and even catchy. The album itself has only 7 tracks and is just under 45 minutes, but its evident that a lot of work went into each individual track and it flows so well from the opening riff of the first track to the final breaths of the final, epic (really) and hypnotic track “Demon Advance”.

Song structure is also simple but very well done. In a time when most metal bands seem hellbent on filling a song with as many riffs/breakdowns/intervals/funny noises as possible but just can’t seem to make any of it interesting, Beherit knows how to change up their songs enough to keep things constantly exciting throughout the entire album while still making each individual song memorable and coherent.

If I wasn’t being clear enough with the review I’ll leave it at this. This album rules. Chances are it won’t sell too many copies because most people are too busy downloading Death Magnetic or some other uninspired and soon to be forgotten metal album, but if you are going to buy one metal album this year, even if you’re not particularly into black metal, it should be Engram. People who like metal that is straightforward and near to perfection will love it." - Sounditoutrecords.com

"Long Island, NY's Vision of Disorder built a large local following with its intense, socially aware blend of hardcore and thrash metal, leading to a contract with the Roadrunner Records-distributed Supersoul label. Guitarists Matt Baumbach and Mike Kennedy formed the band in 1992 with vocalist/lyricist Tim Williams, drummer Brendon Cohen, and bassist Mike Fleischmann. Fleischmann quickly left the band, which performed without a bass player and achieved a measure of local success due to their energetic live shows, at which point Fleischmann returned. Their first break came in 1995, when they had a track featured on the New York's Hardest compilation and released a 7" entitled Still. Swampchode got me on a Pallbearer's kick and somehow it made me run across this band again which I haven't heard in years. Crazy, crusty punk recommended to anybody that's looking to catch a case of whiplash...
"You should know the drill by now, expect lots of fast hardcore/punk (but not too fast) with shouted vocals and fucking slick bass runs that fly all over the place rather than copying the guitars. Most of the songs hover right around a minute each and they just shred straight through without fucking around. These cats were never particularly sloppy, but I must say that the new tracks are tighter than ever, so the performances are really fucking dead on. There's definitely more of an emphasis on the punk influences this time out, it's still thick, but it's not what I would classify as necessarily heavy, and the slightly chaotic aspects have become more controlled and refined, which really fits the delivery a lot better. "Frat Boy", for example, has a slightly "catchier" structure with some gang backup vocals and such, but there are still a few tracks with that driving sort of heavier crust thing happening, namely "Immaculate Deception". Then they close the LP with a great cover of Flipper's "Ha, Ha, Ha". I love the recording. It's thick and natural with a suitable mix that gives everything its own space. It's certainly not polished, but it's not overly raw or anything like that at all. It's a lot clearer and more well rounded than the EP's, that's for sure. The layout is all in black and white with a little bit of green, and the artwork is incredible. There are tons of awesome illustrations, and I love the way the booklet is set up. All of the covers from the 7" releases are included, and the lyrics are presented straight off of the EP layouts as well, which works out great. Most of the lyrics are personal and just deal with base level frustrations and stuff, but then out of nowhere there's a scathing political attack like "Satisfied Means Pacified": "The vote is nothing more than a scam, Like war, taxes, and justice and the freedom of your 'fellow man', So wave the flag and praise the lord, Demand your given voice, Pull the lever, drop the ballot, and believe that you've made a choice." Good stuff. The new songs are the band's best yet in my opinion, so definitely pick this up if you enjoyed any of the previous 7" releases. (7/10)" ~ Aversiononline.com
